US Language Teachers’ Experiences Teaching to and about Trans and Gender non-conforming Speakers
Principal Investigator: Kris Aric Knisely, PhD (knisely@email.arizona.edu)
You are being asked to participate in a research study. Your participation in this research study is voluntary and you do not have to participate. This document contains important information about this study and what to expect if you decide to participate. Please consider the information carefully. Feel free to ask questions before making your decision whether or not to participate.
You are being invited to participate in a research study about teaching to and about transgender, non-binary, or gender non-conforming individuals in the field of language education. You were selected to participate because you are a language educator in the United States who is at least 18 years of age.
What is the purpose of this study? The purpose of this research study is to increase understanding of how language educators perceive teaching to and about gender-diverse individuals. In following, this study explores knowledge of and access to any (formal or informal) professional development on such topics, perceived benefits and challenges, as well as other related experiences, attitudes, and beliefs. This information will be used to create resources for students and teachers of language in the United States as well as for researchers in language education.
What are the requirements to participate? In order to participate, you must be at least 18 years or older and be a K-12 or post-secondary language educator in the US.
How many people will be a part of this study? Approximately 200 people will take part in this study via this online survey over the course of the next several months.
How long will I be in this study? This survey will take approximately 10-25 minutes to complete. You may discontinue participation at any time.
What are the risks and benefits of this study? There are no expected risks to you as a result of participating in this study. You will be invited to provide an email address to be contacted with follow-up questions, however, this information is not required and you may decline to answer any questions or request to no longer be contacted at any time. No other identifiable information will be collected. You will not benefit directly from participating in this study. No compensation will be offered for participation in this study. However, we hope that, in the future, other people might benefit from this study because the information gained will be used to develop educational resources for students, educators, and researchers.
If you become upset by questions you may stop at any time or choose not to answer a question. If you would like to talk to someone about your feelings regarding this study, you are encouraged to contact your local LGBTQ center or the LGBT National Health Center https://www.glbthotline.org/ 1-888-843-45643.
What steps will be taken to keep my information confidential? If you choose to provide an email address, it will be separated from your survey responses by the principle investigator and stored in a separate, encrypted and password-protected file. Your email address will never be shared with anyone other than the research team.
Your name will not be used in any reports or articles. Rather, we will describe the study results in a summarized manner so that you cannot be identified. Identifiable research data will be encrypted and password protected. Your responses will be assigned a code number when any identifying data is separated. The list connecting your email address, if you provided one, to this code will be kept in an encrypted and password protected file. Only the research team will have access to the file. When the study is completed and the data have been analyzed, the list will be destroyed.
Other than the option to provide your email address, the information that you give in the study will be anonymous. Your name will not be collected or linked to your answers. Your email address will not be shared with anyone beyond the research team at any time. Your responses may be used for future research or shared with another researcher for future research studies without additional consent.
The information that you provide in the study will be handled confidentially. However, there may be circumstances where this information must be released or shared as required by law. The University of Arizona Institutional Review Board may review the research records for monitoring purposes.
